At 43 years old, Kadzo descends into caves along the Kenyan coastline where she mines rocks and then breaks them into small stones, 10 hours a day 7 days a week.  Some months she earns as little as $4, with which she has to provide for her 14 children.  This has been Kadzo's life for the past 17 years.

Watching her mother working at the quarry is all 14 year old Salama has ever known, but now she has an opportunity to break the script.
